Profile of Ferdinand II King of Aragon |
Ferdinand II of Aragon (10 March 1452 – 23 January 1516), was King of Sicily from 1468 and King of Aragon from 1479. As Ferdinand V, he was the King of Castile in his right of his wife, Isabella I, from 1475 until she died in 1504. He acted as regent of Castile for his daughter and heir, Joanna the Mad, from 1508 until he died. In 1504, from France he won by conquest the Kingdom of Naples as Ferdinand III, which reunited Naples with Sicily for the first time since 1458. In 1512, he became King of Navarre again by conquest in pursuit of his hereditary claim. In 1492 he fought with Granada and drove the last Islamic state from the Iberian peninsular. Catherine, Ferdinand’s youngest daughter married first Arthur Prince of Wales but he died 1501 and left her a young widow, later in 1509 Catherine married King Henry VIII of England. In pacts of allegiance with his father in law, young King Henry VIII offered military support. In 1511, he sent 1500 archers commanded by Thomas Lord Darcy to help fight the Moors but Ferdinand had no use for them and sent them home. In 1512 Ferdinand used Henry’s forces in Guyenne (Aquitaine) attacking the French under the command of the Marquess of Dorset as a decoy while he seized Navarre. He further embarrassed young Henry by abandoning their agreement to make a separate peace with the French. And in 1513 Henry made another agreement with Ferdinand to attack France the following year but Ferdinand reneged. In 1514 he intervened to prevent the marriage of Henry VIII's sister Mary's marriage to Charles. Ferdinand was succeeded by grandson Charles V. |
